Build · 6 hours · 4 lessons, a lab, an assessed assignment and a portfolio piece

Who it is for

Analysts, office managers and owners who already track KPIs in spreadsheets and want a reliable, shareable dashboard.

Prerequisites

BIA102 or equivalent: you should be able to define KPIs and work with tables in a spreadsheet.

What you will be able to do

  • Prepare tidy source tables and a simple star-schema data model.
  • Create calculated fields or measures for core KPIs such as margin and conversion rate.
  • Choose chart types that match the question being asked and apply a clear visual hierarchy.
  • Publish a working dashboard with filters, date controls and a short user guide.

Lessons

  • Lesson 1 · Preparing data and building a simple model
  • Lesson 2 · Calculated KPIs and correct aggregation
  • Lesson 3 · Layout, chart choice and interactivity
  • Lesson 4 · Lab and assignment

Lab: A sales and margin dashboard

You will connect a sample dataset of orders, products and stores to Looker Studio or Power BI Desktop, build a small data model and create calculated KPIs. Then you will lay out a one-page dashboard with scorecards, a trend chart, a ranked bar chart and filters by store, category and date.

Free tools: Looker Studio (free, browser) with Google Sheets, or Power BI Desktop (free, Windows)

Assessed assignment

Build a one-page dashboard for a real or sample small business that answers three named business questions. Use at least two related tables, create at least three calculated KPIs, include a date control and two filters, and follow the layout principles from Lesson 3. Write a short user guide (about 200 words) that explains what each element shows and how to use the filters.

Criterion Weight What excellent work looks like
Data preparation and model 25% Source tables are tidy, keys are consistent and relationships or blends are correct; totals match the source.
Calculations 25% KPIs are calculated correctly, with ratios aggregated properly (sum of numerator over sum of denominator).
Visual design 30% Charts fit the questions, the most important number is seen first, labels are clear and color is used sparingly and consistently.
Usability and guide 20% Filters work as expected, the dashboard loads quickly and the user guide lets a new viewer use it without help.

Portfolio piece

A published one-page BI dashboard with its data model and a short user guide, ready to show in your portfolio.

Self-paced, 12-month access. Questions are answered in writing through the student panel. A completion record is issued when you finish the course.
