UXD106 · AI-Assisted Design Workflows
About Course
Use AI assistants responsibly to speed up research synthesis, ideation, UX writing and design-system work, verify every output, and design AI-powered features that users can understand, trust and correct.
Who it is for
Designers and product teams who already follow a UX process and want to integrate AI tools efficiently without lowering quality or ethics.
Prerequisites
UXD102 and UXD105, or experience with user research, prototyping and testing.
What you will be able to do
- Map which steps of the design process benefit from AI assistance and which require human judgment
- Write structured prompts for synthesis, ideation and microcopy that produce verifiable outputs
- Apply a verification and privacy checklist to every AI-assisted deliverable
- Design an AI-powered feature using established human-AI interaction guidelines
Lessons
- Lesson 1 · Where AI fits in the design process
- Lesson 2 · Prompting and verification for design tasks
- Lesson 3 · Responsible AI and designing AI features
- Lesson 4 · Lab and assignment
Lab: AI-assisted synthesis and microcopy with a verification log
You take anonymized notes from an earlier research study and ask an AI assistant to cluster them, then compare its clusters with your own affinity map. You generate and refine microcopy variants for a key screen, and you record every prompt, output, correction and decision in a verification log.
Free tools: Free tier of a general AI assistant (such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini), FigJam and Figma free plan, Google Sheets
Assessed assignment
Submit your AI workflow log, a one-page comparison of AI and manual synthesis, the final microcopy with the rejected variants and your reasons, and two Figma screens for an AI-powered feature in a small-business product, such as an assistant that suggests replies to customer reviews. The feature screens must show how the system sets expectations, explains or shows sources where appropriate, lets users edit or undo and collects feedback. Explain which human-AI guidelines you applied and what you would test with users.
| Criterion | Weight | What excellent work looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow and prompting | 25% | Prompts are structured with context, task, constraints and format, and the log shows iteration rather than copy-and-paste. |
| Verification and ethics | 30% | Every output is checked against source data, errors are documented, no personal data was shared and limitations are stated honestly. |
| Synthesis and microcopy quality | 20% | The comparison identifies where AI helped and where it missed nuance; final microcopy is clear, concise and fits the constraints. |
| AI feature design | 25% | Screens apply human-AI guidelines visibly, with clear expectations, control, correction and feedback, and a sensible test plan. |
Portfolio piece
An AI-assisted design case study with a verification log and AI feature screens, showing you can use AI responsibly in professional work.
