NCL104 · Automating Workflows with No-Code Platforms
About Course
Design and build reliable automated workflows that move data between forms, spreadsheets, email and apps, with branching, error handling and monitoring.
Who it is for
Office staff, owners and makers who spend hours copying data between tools and want dependable automations.
Prerequisites
NCL103 or equivalent: comfortable with tables, fields and basic app data; no programming required.
What you will be able to do
- Break a manual process into triggers, steps, conditions and outputs.
- Build a multi-step workflow with data mapping, filters and branches.
- Add error handling, retries and duplicate protection to make automations reliable.
- Test, document and monitor an automation so others can maintain it.
Lessons
- Lesson 1 · Thinking in triggers, steps and data
- Lesson 2 · Building multi-step workflows with branches
- Lesson 3 · Reliability: errors, duplicates and monitoring
- Lesson 4 · Lab and assignment
Lab: Automating service requests
You will automate the intake of service requests for a sample heating and cooling company. A form submission will trigger a workflow that cleans the data, adds a row to a jobs sheet, branches urgent requests to an immediate alert, sends the customer a confirmation email and logs any errors to a separate sheet.
Free tools: n8n self-hosted (free, via Docker Desktop or npx on your computer); alternatively the free plan of Make or Zapier; Google Forms, Google Sheets and Gmail
Assessed assignment
Automate a real or realistic small-business process with at least five steps, one condition or branch and one external output such as an email or a spreadsheet row. Draw the workflow before building it, implement it in n8n, Make or Zapier, add error handling and duplicate protection, and test it with at least five sample cases, including one that should fail. Submit an export or screenshots of the workflow, the test table and a one-page runbook.
| Criterion | Weight | What excellent work looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Process design | 20% | The workflow diagram shows the trigger, steps, conditions and outputs clearly and matches the real process. |
| Build and data mapping | 30% | Fields are mapped correctly, data is cleaned and formatted and branches route each case as intended. |
| Reliability | 30% | Errors are caught and logged, retries or alerts are configured and duplicates are prevented. |
| Testing and runbook | 20% | Test cases cover normal, edge and failure scenarios, and the runbook lets someone else operate and fix the automation. |
Portfolio piece
A documented, tested automation workflow with its diagram, test table and runbook.
