About Course

Learn to identify, prevent and respond to the main technical, operational and legal risks of Web3 projects, from smart-contract weaknesses and key custody to anti-money-laundering, consumer-protection and privacy rules.

Advance · 8 hours · 4 lessons, a lab, an assessed assignment and a portfolio piece

Who it is for

Security, risk and compliance professionals, developers and business leaders who must approve or govern blockchain initiatives.

Prerequisites

BLK103 and BLK104; BLK102 for key-management concepts.

What you will be able to do

  • Classify Web3 risks into smart-contract, key and custody, operational, user and regulatory categories
  • Use free static-analysis tools to detect common weaknesses and apply defensive coding patterns to fix them
  • Build a Web3 incident response plan covering detection, pausing, communication and recovery
  • Map a project to the relevant US regulatory regimes and produce a compliance checklist

Lessons

  • Lesson 1 · A risk map for Web3 projects
  • Lesson 2 · Secure smart-contract development and monitoring
  • Lesson 3 · Regulation and compliance in the US
  • Lesson 4 · Lab and assignment

Lab: Review and harden a refund contract

You review a short refund contract that contains common weaknesses, such as missing access control and state updated after an external transfer. You run the Remix static analyzer and Slither, interpret each finding and apply defensive fixes: checks-effects-interactions, OpenZeppelin access control, ReentrancyGuard and a pause switch. You re-run the tools on the Remix VM and document the before-and-after results.

Free tools: Remix IDE with its static-analysis plugin and Solhint, plus Slither in Google Colab (all free)

Assessed assignment

Prepare a risk and compliance pack for a fictional Web3 pilot, such as a tokenized gift-card program for a retail chain. Include a risk register with at least ten risks rated by likelihood and impact, with owners and controls. Add your hardened lab contract with the static-analysis report, a one-page incident response playbook and a regulatory checklist mapping the pilot to the relevant US rules. Conclude with a go, no-go or go-with-conditions recommendation.

Criterion Weight What excellent work looks like
Risk register 30% Covers all five risk categories with realistic ratings, named owners and specific, testable controls.
Secure code evidence 25% Findings are explained correctly, fixes follow recognized patterns and the re-scan shows them resolved.
Incident playbook 20% Defines detection signals, decision rights, pause steps, communication templates and recovery actions.
Regulatory mapping and verdict 25% Identifies applicable rules accurately, notes where legal counsel is needed and justifies the recommendation.

Portfolio piece

A Web3 risk and compliance pack: risk register, hardened contract with scan report, incident playbook and regulatory checklist.

Self-paced, 12-month access. Questions are answered in writing through the student panel. A completion record is issued when you finish the course.
