DEV109 · Final Project: An Automated Delivery Pipeline for a Web App
About Course
Design and build a complete, automated delivery pipeline for a small business web app: from commit to tested container, infrastructure as code, Kubernetes deployment, monitoring and rollback. You finish with a portfolio-ready platform repository, documentation and a demo video.
Who it is for
Learners who have completed the DevOps, Containers and Cloud Automation courses and want to prove they can run delivery end to end.
Prerequisites
Complete DEV101 to DEV108, or have equivalent experience with Linux, Git, CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform and monitoring.
What you will be able to do
- Define the scope, architecture and success metrics of a delivery platform for a real business case.
- Build an automated pipeline that tests, scans, packages and deploys a containerized web app to Kubernetes.
- Provision and configure the environment with Terraform and manifests or Helm, with secrets handled safely.
- Demonstrate monitoring, alerting, a safe rollback and DORA metrics with clear documentation.
Lessons
- Lesson 1 · Project brief and scope
- Lesson 2 · Milestones and method
- Lesson 3 · Quality checklist and common mistakes
- Lesson 4 · Deliverables, rubric and submission
Lab: Platform build workspace
This course has no separate exercise: your lab time is the project itself. You will work through four milestones in your own repository, tracking progress with issues and a project board, and you will tag a release at the end of each milestone.
Free tools: Git and GitHub free with GitHub Actions and GitHub Container Registry, Docker Desktop, kind or minikube, kubectl and Helm, Terraform or OpenTofu, Trivy, Prometheus, Grafana and Loki
Assessed assignment
Build an automated delivery pipeline for a small web application of your choice, such as the booking API of a clinic, the order system of a bakery or the catalog of a local store (you may reuse an app from another course). On every pull request the pipeline must lint, test, scan dependencies and the image, and post a Terraform plan; on merge to main it must build and push a versioned image and deploy it to a staging environment, with a protected promotion to production. Provision the environments with Terraform and deploy with manifests or Helm, including probes, resource limits and secrets handled outside Git. Add dashboards and at least two SLO-based alerts, demonstrate a failed deployment being rolled back, and report your DORA metrics over at least ten deployments.
| Criterion | Weight | What excellent work looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Pipeline and automation | 30% | Every stage runs automatically with correct gates, versioned artifacts and a protected promotion path. |
| Infrastructure and deployment | 25% | Terraform and Kubernetes configuration are modular, reproducible and follow security practices from the program. |
| Observability and reliability | 25% | Dashboards, SLO alerts with runbooks and the demonstrated rollback show the system can be operated safely. |
| Documentation and presentation | 20% | Architecture diagram, runbook, DORA report and demo let a reviewer understand and reproduce the platform. |
Portfolio piece
A complete, documented delivery platform repository with pipeline, infrastructure code, Kubernetes deployment, monitoring and a demo video, ready to show in your portfolio.
