IOT109 · Final Project: A Smart Monitoring System
About Course
Design, build and document a complete smart monitoring system for a realistic small-business scenario, from simulated sensor nodes to secure messaging, storage, dashboards, alerts and an edge-intelligence feature.
Who it is for
Learners who have completed the IoT program courses and want a portfolio-grade project that demonstrates end-to-end skills.
Prerequisites
IOT101 to IOT108, or equivalent experience with ESP32 firmware, MQTT, a time-series stack and IoT security basics.
What you will be able to do
- Translate a business problem into measurable requirements, an architecture and a scoped project plan.
- Integrate at least two simulated sensor nodes, a secured broker, a time-series database and a dashboard into one working system.
- Implement actionable alerts and one edge-processing or edge-AI feature with documented safety behavior.
- Document, test and present the system so a business owner could evaluate and operate it.
Lessons
- Lesson 1 · Project brief and scope
- Lesson 2 · Milestones and method
- Lesson 3 · Quality checklist and common mistakes
- Lesson 4 · Deliverables, rubric and submission
Lab: Smart monitoring system for a chosen small business
You choose one scenario (cold chain for a food business, air quality for a clinic or school, energy use for a retail store, or soil and water for a small farm) and build a complete system in simulation and on your own computer. The system must be secure by default, produce actionable alerts and include one feature that processes data at the edge.
Free tools: Wokwi ESP32 simulator, Docker Desktop, Mosquitto, Node-RED, InfluxDB OSS, Grafana OSS, Google Colab, GitHub free (all free)
Assessed assignment
Build and document a smart monitoring system for your chosen scenario following the build steps. The system must work end to end in simulation and on your computer, with secure messaging, stored history, a purposeful dashboard, actionable alerts and one edge-processing feature. Package all deliverables, record a short demo and write a reflection on what you would change before a real deployment. Submit everything through the student panel as one organized package.
| Criterion | Weight | What excellent work looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Problem fit and design | 25% | Requirements trace clearly to the business problem; architecture, sensors and connectivity are justified. |
| Working integration | 30% | All components work together end to end, with validated data, alerts that fire correctly and resilient firmware. |
| Security, privacy and safety | 25% | Credentials, ACLs, encryption, data minimization and fail-safe behavior are implemented or clearly specified. |
| Documentation and presentation | 20% | Repository, README, operations guide and demo are clear enough for a business owner to evaluate and operate the system. |
Portfolio piece
A complete, documented IoT monitoring system with public repository, demo video and operations guide, the capstone of your IoT portfolio.
