About Course

Design, build and secure connected devices and monitoring systems, entirely in free simulators and open-source tools.

This 60-hour, self-paced program takes you from your first simulated sensor to a complete smart monitoring system. You learn electronics basics, Arduino and ESP32 firmware, sensors and actuators, IoT networking with MQTT, HTTP and LoRaWAN, time-series platforms and dashboards, security and privacy, and edge AI. Every lab runs in free tools such as Wokwi, Tinkercad Circuits, Node-RED, InfluxDB, Grafana and Google Colab, so no hardware purchase is required. You finish with a documented capstone project for your portfolio.

60 hours · 9 courses, from Explore to Advance, ending with a final project · Certificate of completion · 12-month access

Who it is for

Working adults, technicians and small-business teams who want to plan, prototype or manage IoT solutions. No prior electronics or programming experience is needed to start.

Prerequisites

Comfort using a computer and web browser; the first courses introduce electronics and programming from the beginning.

What you will be able to do

  • Design an IoT architecture that fits a real business problem, including sensors, connectivity, platform and applications.
  • Program ESP32 firmware that reads sensors, controls actuators and communicates reliably over MQTT.
  • Build a self-hosted data pipeline with dashboards and alerts that people can act on.
  • Apply security, privacy and edge-AI practices to deliver safe, efficient smart monitoring systems.

Course Content

IOT101 · Introduction to the Internet of Things (4 h)
A plain-language tour of the Internet of Things: what a connected device is made of, how data flows from a sensor to a screen, and where IoT pays off for small businesses.

  • Lesson 1 · What the Internet of Things really is
  • Lesson 2 · The four layers of an IoT system
  • Lesson 3 · IoT use cases and limits for small businesses
  • Lesson 4 · Lab and assignment
  • IOT101 Assessment · Introduction to the Internet of Things

IOT102 · Electronics Basics for IoT (4 h)
The electronics you need to build IoT prototypes safely: voltage, current, resistance, Ohm's law, breadboards, common components and how to measure circuits, all practiced in a free browser simulator.

IOT103 · Microcontrollers: Arduino and ESP32 (6 h)
Program Arduino and ESP32 microcontrollers in C++ with the Arduino framework: digital and analog I/O, PWM, timing without blocking, serial debugging and Wi-Fi, all in the free Wokwi simulator.

IOT104 · Sensors, Actuators and Data Collection (6 h)
Choose, connect and read real-world sensors, drive actuators safely and turn raw readings into clean, timestamped data you can analyze, using simulated ESP32 projects.

IOT105 · IoT Networking and Protocols (MQTT, HTTP, LoRa) (8 h)
Design how IoT devices talk: compare Wi-Fi, BLE, cellular and LoRaWAN, implement HTTP and MQTT messaging with topics, QoS and last-will messages, and encode compact payloads for low-power long-range links.

IOT106 · Cloud Platforms and Dashboards for IoT (8 h)
Build the platform side of IoT: ingest device messages, store them as time-series data, transform them with flows and present them on dashboards with alerts that people actually act on, using a free open-source stack on your own computer.

IOT107 · IoT Security and Privacy (8 h)
Protect IoT systems end to end: model threats, harden devices and brokers, encrypt and authenticate traffic, segment networks, plan secure updates and govern the personal data that sensors collect.

IOT108 · Edge AI and Smart Automation (8 h)
Run intelligence where the data is born: prepare sensor data, train and compress small machine-learning models for microcontrollers and combine them with rules into safe, automated responses.

IOT109 · Final Project: A Smart Monitoring System (8 h)
Design, build and document a complete smart monitoring system for a realistic small-business scenario, from simulated sensor nodes to secure messaging, storage, dashboards, alerts and an edge-intelligence feature.
