NCL103 · Databases and Apps with No-Code Tools
About Course
Design a small relational database for a business process and turn it into a working mobile app with screens, actions and user roles, all with no-code tools.
Who it is for
Office managers, owners and makers who manage customers, jobs or inventory in messy spreadsheets and want a reliable app instead.
Prerequisites
NCL101 or equivalent; you should be comfortable with spreadsheets and basic sorting and filtering.
What you will be able to do
- Model a business process as related tables with appropriate field types and keys.
- Use views, formulas, lookups and rollups to answer operational questions.
- Build an app with list and detail screens, forms and actions on top of the database.
- Configure user roles and row-level visibility so each person sees only the right data.
Lessons
- Lesson 1 · Designing a relational data model
- Lesson 2 · Views, formulas, lookups and rollups
- Lesson 3 · Building the app: screens, actions and roles
- Lesson 4 · Lab and assignment
Lab: An equipment rental app
You will design a database for a sample party-equipment rental business with tables for items, customers, rentals and rental lines. Then you will build a mobile app where staff check availability, create rentals, mark items as returned and see the day's deliveries, with a separate, limited view for delivery drivers.
Free tools: Google Sheets or Airtable (free plans) with Glide or AppSheet (free plans)
Assessed assignment
Design and build a no-code app for a real or realistic small-business process that involves at least three related tables. Document the data model with an entity diagram and field list, build at least four screens including a form and a detail view, add at least one action that changes data, and configure two user roles with different visibility. Test the app with sample data and record three issues you fixed.
| Criterion | Weight | What excellent work looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Data model | 30% | Tables, field types and relationships match the process; there is no duplicated data and every table has a unique key. |
| Calculations and views | 20% | Formulas, lookups or rollups answer real questions, such as availability or totals, correctly. |
| App screens and actions | 30% | Screens are clear on a phone, forms validate input and actions update the right records. |
| Roles and testing | 20% | Roles restrict data appropriately, and the test log shows issues found and fixed. |
Portfolio piece
