ROB109 · Final Project: An Autonomous Robot Task in Simulation
About Course
Plan, build, test and document an autonomous robot that completes a realistic business task in simulation, integrating perception, decision-making, motion and safety into one reliable system.
Who it is for
Learners who have completed the robotics program courses and want a portfolio-grade project that shows end-to-end robotics skills.
Prerequisites
ROB101 to ROB108, or equivalent experience with robot programming in Python, kinematics, computer vision, ROS 2 navigation and robot safety.
What you will be able to do
- Translate a business task into measurable robot requirements, a system architecture and a scoped plan.
- Integrate perception, state-machine or behavior-tree logic and motion control into an autonomous robot in Webots or Gazebo.
- Implement and verify safety behaviors, including a software safety layer and fault handling.
- Evaluate the robot over repeated trials with quantitative metrics and present the results to a non-specialist audience.
Lessons
- Lesson 1 · Project brief and scope
- Lesson 2 · Milestones and method
- Lesson 3 · Quality checklist and common mistakes
- Lesson 4 · Deliverables, rubric and submission
Lab: An autonomous robot task for a chosen business scenario
You choose one scenario (tote delivery between stations in a small warehouse, color- or marker-based sorting with a robot arm, a shelf-inspection patrol, or a hospital-style supply run) and build a robot that completes it autonomously in simulation. The robot must perceive its task targets, decide what to do, move safely and recover from at least two faults.
Free tools: Webots or Gazebo with ROS 2 (free), Python, OpenCV, Google Colab for analysis, GitHub free
Assessed assignment
Build and document an autonomous robot that completes your chosen task in simulation following the build steps. The robot must perceive, decide and act autonomously, enforce safety rules and handle at least two injected faults. Run a repeatable evaluation of at least 20 trials, package all deliverables and record a short demo. Submit everything through the student panel with a reflection on what would need to change before testing with a real robot.
| Criterion | Weight | What excellent work looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Task design and architecture | 20% | Requirements trace to the business task; the architecture is clear, justified and documented. |
| Autonomous performance | 30% | The robot completes the task autonomously with perception, decision logic and motion working together across trials. |
| Safety and fault handling | 25% | Safety rules are enforced, both injected faults are handled with recovery or safe stop and behavior is verified. |
| Evaluation and communication | 25% | Metrics from 20+ trials are correct and interpreted honestly; repository, demo and summary are clear to non-specialists. |
Portfolio piece
A complete autonomous-robot project with repository, evaluated results, safety summary and demo video, the capstone of your robotics portfolio.
