IOT102 · Electronics Basics for IoT
About Course
The electronics you need to build IoT prototypes safely: voltage, current, resistance, Ohm's law, breadboards, common components and how to measure circuits, all practiced in a free browser simulator.
Who it is for
Beginners who have never wired a circuit and want enough electronics to work confidently with microcontrollers.
Prerequisites
IOT101 is recommended; no prior electronics knowledge is required.
What you will be able to do
- Calculate voltage, current or resistance in a simple circuit using Ohm's law.
- Select a correct current-limiting resistor for an LED powered from 3.3 V or 5 V.
- Build and measure a series circuit and a voltage divider in Tinkercad Circuits.
- Explain the difference between digital and analog signals and how a microcontroller reads each.
Lessons
- Lesson 1 · Voltage, current, resistance and Ohm's law
- Lesson 2 · Components and the breadboard
- Lesson 3 · Signals, measurement and safe practice
- Lesson 4 · Lab and assignment
Lab: Build and measure circuits on a virtual breadboard
You build an LED circuit with a calculated resistor, measure voltage and current with the virtual multimeter, and then build a light-sensing voltage divider with a photoresistor. You compare your calculations with the simulated measurements.
Free tools: Tinkercad Circuits (free, in the browser)
Assessed assignment
Submit your Tinkercad design link or screenshots of both circuits and a measurement table with calculated versus simulated values. Explain in your own words why the LED needs a resistor and what would happen without one. Describe how the voltage divider output would be read by a microcontroller's analog input. Finish with a short safety checklist for working with real low-voltage circuits.
| Criterion | Weight | What excellent work looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Correct calculations | 30% | Ohm's law is applied correctly, units are shown and standard resistor values are chosen sensibly. |
| Working circuits | 30% | Both circuits are wired correctly in the simulator and behave as expected. |
| Measurement and comparison | 25% | Voltage and current are measured at the right points and differences from calculations are explained. |
| Safety and clarity | 15% | The safety checklist is practical and the explanation is clear enough for a beginner. |
Portfolio piece
A documented Tinkercad circuit pair (LED and light sensor) with a measurement table you can reuse as a reference sheet.
